All batteries naturally grow old and die, and iPod batteries often do within 2-4 years or sooner with heavy use. While it's inevitable that your battery will eventually give in their are a few thing that you can do to help it lead a fuller life.

Use your iPod

It's best to charge and use your iPod at least once a month. If you leave your iPod sitting around for ages you may find that the battery will hold less of a charge or none at all.

Don't freeze or cook your iPod

Keeping your iPod near room temperature will help you battery last a lot longer. For most people this means don't leave your iPod in the car. Extreme hot or cold will permanently damage your iPod's battery.

Give your iPod some air

When charging don't leave your iPod in a case. Some cases will allow heat to buildup, damaging the iPods battery.

Don't completely drain your battery

Contrary to what you may have been told it is not best to completely drain an iPods battery every time before charging it. While this is true for older batteries iPods use newer lithium based battery technology that tends to last longer if you top it up when its needed.
